Scotsman EcoX – F-GAS 2025…

3rd of December 2024
Scotsman

In January 2025, updates to the European F-Gas regulations will enforce stricter controls on the use of fluorinated gases, focusing on reducing their environmental impact. These regulations will phase out high-GWP (Global Warming Potential) refrigerants, mandating the adoption of lower-GWP alternatives.

From January 2025, Scotsman ice machines will only be available with EcoX refrigerants R290 (Propane) and R744 (carbon dioxide). The majority of the Scotsman ice machine range have already transitioned on to these refrigerants. Any model number ending in 7 (EC57 for example) is fully compliant with the 2025 changes to the regulations. Unfortunately, there may be a few gaps in the range during 2025, especially high volume modular machines. These models, or new alternatives, will be made available throughout 2025 as development and final testing is completed.

However, there are few exceptions… ice machines installed with remote refrigeration systems or those that are ‘mobile’ (i.e. ice machines installed on cruise ships) do not fall under the existing regulations and will still be available. Therefore, if you need a large modular ice machine, you can still get one but it will need to be remotely refrigerated.

Unfortunately, these changes to the European F-Gas regulations will effect supply of Scotsman equipment in the UK regardless of whether the UK Government ratifies the changes in to UK law at the same time or choses to delay. As a EU based manufacturer, Scotsman will not be able to export non-compliant equipment regardless of the rules governing the region where the equipment will be installed.

Confused? We’re not surprised!

Scotsman EcoX – The Eco-Friendly natural refrigerants, available for all of the Scotsman Ice Maker Ranges

R290 (Propane) and R744 (carbon dioxide) are environmentally friendly refrigerants known for their almost zero carbon footprint environmental impact and energy efficiency. They offer an eco-conscious alternative to traditional refrigerants, aligning with Scotsman Ice’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.

Benefits of R290 and R744 in Scotsman Ice Machines:

SUSTAINABLE – R290 and R744 refrigerants have significantly lower than 150 GWP (Global Warming Potential) compared to traditional refrigerants, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Scotsman Ice machines powered by R290 and R744 contribute to environmental conservation efforts.

EFFICIENT – R290 and R744 are known for their high energy efficiency, allowing Scotsman Ice machines to operate more efficiently and reduce operating costs.

RELIABLE – Scotsman Ice machines powered by R290 and R744 are designed for maximum reliability and longevity, ensuring optimal performance over time.

F-Gas Regulations

The European Union is committed to taking strong action to reduce the impact of climate change. The new F-Gas Regulation (2024/573) Directive, which will be fully implemented by 2025, aims to ban the use of harmful refrigerants with a high GWP (Global Warming Potential). The F-Gas Regulation relates to two major worldwide protocols on climate change: the Montreal Protocol, covering Ozone Depletion Concerns and the Kyoto Protocol, covering Global Warning Concerns.

The two significant extracts from new F-GAS Regulation (EU) 2024/573 are:

Article 11 – Placing into the EU countries:

From 1st January 2025 the sales of foams, technical aerosols, stationary refrigeration and stationary air-conditioning equipment and stationary heat pumps as referred to in Annex IV that contain, or whose functioning relies upon, fluorinated greenhouse gases with a GWP of 150 or more shall be prohibited,

Article 22 – Sales export from the EU countries:

From 12nd March 2025 the export of foams, technical aerosols, stationary refrigeration and stationary air-conditioning equipment and stationary heat pumps as referred to in Annex IV that contain, or whose functioning relies upon, fluorinated greenhouse gases with a GWP of 1 000 or more shall be prohibited.
